An AC charging pile provides power to an electric vehicle (EV) using the standard Alternating Current (AC) from the grid. Here’s how it works in simple steps.


First, when an EV is plugged into the AC charging pile, the pile's internal safety system performs a handshake with the vehicle. It checks the connection and communicates with the car's onboard charger to confirm compatibility and safe parameters.


Next, the core function begins. The AC charging pile itself does not convert electricity; it acts as a controlled and safe outlet. It delivers AC power from the grid directly to the vehicle through the charging cable. The critical conversion from AC to the Direct Current (DC) needed to charge the car's battery happens ‌inside the EV‌, via its built-in ‌onboard charger‌. This component is limited in size and power, which is why AC charging is typically slower than DC fast charging.


Finally, the charging pile manages the session. It regulates the flow of electricity, monitors for any faults like overheating or irregular current, and stops the charge when the vehicle's battery is full or if the user disconnects. Smart AC piles can also connect to a network, allowing for user authentication, remote monitoring, and scheduled charging during off-peak hours to save costs.
